The Power of Affirmations - Why Young Riders Need Them

Affirmations aren’t just pretty words you scroll past on social media. For young riders, they can be the difference between giving up and finding the courage to keep showing up.

But here’s the thing: affirmations are not a one-size-fits-all, magic fix. They don’t replace good coaching, safe riding practices, or knowing when to step back. Bravery is important - but safety always comes first. Staying in the saddle is only ever the right choice if it’s safe to do so.

I’ve seen this balance play out firsthand with my daughter, Matilda, and her pony, Raven.

From Unicorns to a Headstrong Brumby

Matilda’s first ponies were the “unicorns” of the horse world - steady, sweet, and safe. Then along came Raven. A little black Brumby, full of fire and spirit. Every ride came with a pigroot or two. His canter was powerful, his opinions loud, and for a 10-year-old girl, it was a massive learning curve.

There were plenty of tears. Plenty of nerves. And honestly - all of that was completely valid. Raven wasn’t being “naughty”; he was simply showing who he was: headstrong, spirited, and full of energy. And for a young rider just finding her seat, it was intimidating.

But here’s what blew me away: it didn’t turn Matilda off him.

Mindset That Changed Everything

Her self-talk, her affirmations - whether she realised they were affirmations or not - became her anchor. Instead of saying I can’t do this, she told herself, It can only get better. Instead of walking away, she whispered, I love him, I want to learn with him, I trust we can figure this out together.

And that mindset? It changed everything.

There were still nerves, and plenty of moments of worry - that’s only natural when you’re learning with a pony as spirited as Raven. But alongside those feelings, the positives kept showing up. With every ride, Matilda’s confidence inched forward. Her seat grew deeper. Her arms softened. Her body started to move with him, not against him. What once looked like headstrong stubbornness slowly began to shift into partnership. Raven was still Raven - powerful and full of spirit - but now Matilda was really riding him, with a growing belief in herself and a trust that their connection could carry them through.

Why Affirmations Matter for Young Riders

That’s the power of affirmations. They’re not magic words that make ponies perfect or stop the challenges. They’re reminders of what’s already within - bravery, love, persistence. They give young riders the courage to keep showing up when it’s safe to do so, even when it’s hard.

And it’s not just about riding. When kids practise positive self-talk with their horses, it flows into every part of their lives. School. Friendships. Challenges outside the arena. Affirmations teach them to meet fear with bravery and setbacks with resilience.

The Riding Brave Affirmation Cards

This is why I created the Riding Brave Affirmation Cards - 30 gentle but powerful reminders designed especially for riders aged 6–15. They’re a little pocket of courage kids can reach for on the days when confidence wobbles, or when fear whispers too loud.

If your child has faced falls, setbacks, or the fear of simply being around horses, these cards are for them. They’re not about telling kids it’s easy. They’re about showing them they already have what it takes to keep going, to keep learning, to keep building the bond that makes horse riding so special.

Bravery That Lasts

Watching Matilda and Raven, I’m reminded daily: bravery isn’t about never being afraid. It’s about choosing to keep showing up - listening, learning, trusting, growing.

Because affirmations aren’t just words. They’re life skills. They shape how our kids ride, but more importantly, they shape who they become.

⚠️ Safety Note: Every rider’s journey is unique. Affirmations are a powerful tool, but they’re not a replacement for qualified instruction, safe practices, and knowing when to take a step back. Always ensure your child rides under appropriate guidance and within safe limits.
